Earlier this month, BirdLife Castlemaine District’s Convenor, Jane Rusden, and I met with Lisa Chesters MP and excited locals in Muckleford, where a flock of forty Swift Parrots had been sighted.

Current estimates suggest there are fewer than 500 ‘Swifties’ remaining in the wild, so as thrilling as it was to spot these beautiful parrots, I couldn’t help ponder the reality that we were standing in front of 10% of the remaining Swift Parrot population, right here in the seat of Bendigo.

Australia’s nature laws are failing birds like critically endangered Swift Parrots. The Government have proposed some new legislation already, but more is needed to protect Aussie nature and to restore the populations of birds around the country.

I look forward to seeing you at our community forum on Saturday, August 31st from 1:30pm. Please RSVP here, David, and invite any Bendigo-local friends and family you think would enjoy the event, too!

Yours sincerely,
